If the 21st Century Rhymed to history, China would be the new US -- feverish with individual and national drive, manufacturer to the world, growing like crazy, and bigger and populous than the current superpower, which will have a on going demand for products and techonology and the excesses that Americans enjoyed for atleast more than half of this century.

How to end recession 2009 ? Radical ideas!!
Okay!
USA is now officially in recession for close to 8 months. Unofficially and unfortunately it has been close to 18 months now. Most of us in the service sector know that very well.
Now i was also in quite a confusion that whether Keynes was right or Schumpeter was right when Bush and Obama started the war against the recession. I just love their theories. Both are considered top 2 economists of the century. And
Lets first point out the facts which are pulling the economy down! Though everyone knows the basics of this bloody game. Its all inter-related.

Executive pay linked to under-performers aka Lowest paid workers!
This argument is like imposing a penalty for being in the position which was actually hard-earned by the executive. There is no rationale for this unless we have a communist system or if the company is not following performance based payroll system.
Executives get their higher pays because they take executive decisions and they have the power to influence, guide and cultivate the ground root workers. Its a human engineering approach and we need to agree to the viewpoint that without executives, the workers, the so called underpaid employees will never go anywhere. The guidance for future is developed by the executives and bricks for the road to that future is laid by the workers. They are all important in the overall step. But if you didn't even know about the road, what would you had, had been laying bricks for?
If you link the salary of that hard working executive to that of their lowest paid employees, essentially you would be forcing the executive to focus on the development of those employees, which is what i assume would be the sole cause of implementing such a policy. On the top, this looks like a thing which should be done. But even in the best productive environment, not all employees contribute equally to the 100% of the goal. A executive achieves this by unequally distributing the goal in his workers. He gives the people whom he trusts more by years of their experience and performance along the way, maximum work. Gradually decreasing portion is given to under performing group. This is what decides the salaries too in the end. Because everyone is in a performance based evaluation and their is room for improvement as competition would be fierce even within the walls.
Now in such cases where unions demand higher pays and site the unequal pays between the management and workers, linking these two levels salaries or components will certainly bring down the costly labor to an extent in the department. But overall effects would be a lethargic, non performing executive, who he knows cant do enough to get a better incentive as there will always be some percentage of his team who will be under performing. I am saying in the wider sense. There might be instances where the whole team is the best team outright. But think rationally and watch the whole system, can this be true?
Stressing the executive out to focus on his lower paid workers, will essentially rob him of his creativity and zeal. It will outright stress him to continually focus on flab and he will never be able to capitalize on the strengths. This means gloomy future for the company. In today's competition, strengths need to materialize to pillars and weakness needs to be flattened out to reduce their impact.
And the answer is only performance based pay.
Yes i agree though the performance should be measured in a 360 degree view. the lower paid guys should have a say in deciding the performance of the executive as well as the guys who did well under that executive. This will create the best possible working culture in the company.

Medical profession and corporate greed

"Art and music have long been understood to have therapeutic effects for individuals who suffer from either physical or mental illnesses. However, most doctors rarely recommend to patients some form of art or music therapy. Instead, doctors focus almost all of their attention on costly drug treatments and invasive procedures that carry serious risks and side-effects. By focusing on these expensive procedures rather than low-cost treatments such as art and music therapy, doctors are doing a disservice to their patients and contributing to the rising cost of health care in the United States."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. Medical profession is once of the most admired profession and the jobs in our society like justice system. If you lose hope in these professions that means that the country is in deep peril. What i believe is that, this argument which puts the blame squarely on doctors of not doing enough portrays the singular thinking of the writer. This being the fact that our society is still functioning and we certainly don't live in a dark age.
The fact that art and music has therapeutic effect on patients has its merits but science has not approved it completely. We all are in someways bound by the peers who have mended the ways of society for so long. And until they put a go-ahead sign, doctors cant give the advice to some patient, lest it be some one who sues him later that his doctor went astray and didn't provide him good treatment.
But we being intelligent people, why cant we have art and music in our life? The serene nature itself is a art. But we keep on destroying it. We forget that there has to have some time to rest, not just for our body but for rejuvenation of our souls. Art like our beautiful churches, temples and nature's art, the green valley's and silent yet loud rivers, they all cheer us up. Being with our close ones and helping others, is another human art wherein we stress that when God created us, he did it in his best state of mind.
A soothing song and sometimes just raw melodies melts up the stress in our lives and makes us happier.
And a kid's laugh or your wives giggle, doesn't that bring a smile on your face.
But ask yourself and you will say now, we all know these are good things and we are missing them in our race to greed and excess consumerism.
Then why are we putting the blame on the pillars of medical profession. Doctors do the best they can, to save their patients and do what is in the best interest of them. But a taint might be there, because of giant corporate style, profit hungry pharmaceutical companies. This has to be brought forward to notice of general public and medical conferences. But until then, lets not paint this holy profession completely black.
Being raised by a doctor and of course being proud of him makes me completely against this blame game. This might be seen as a pervasive attempt to protect someone closer to me. But i have seen humanity and a genuine relationship between a doctor and a patient. A patient trusts his doctor more than he does so his own god.

Negative marking system and incubating would be managers
This Sunday when I was on my way home after yet another average score with AIMCAT 0902, something nagged my inner self on the fact that 23 marks of mine were gone in negative marking. Negative marking, is it necessary? On my relation with India’s premier institute’s competitive tests, I have had a long one and never a good one. Hey, I am a pretty average student. This long enduring relationship and I am not ashamed of it and though I am 27, made me go back and have a look in my past remembrances. The first competition which I appeared was for sainik school and netarhat. I remember there was no negative marking in Netarhat but there was for Sainik School. I didn’t clear them for I was competing with Geniuses, I guess. But that was school. There was one pattern though, questions are relatively easy where negative marking is and when none is there as in Netarhat and later on IIT JEE , really tough questions and written examination which is different from MCQ questions on a OMR sheet evaluation system. MCQ system makes you an expert in time management and yet it makes you a coward inherently because of this negative marking.
What I think wrong of negative marking is the message it conveys.
If you want to do it, do it right, else don’t do it.
Isn’t it morally wrong?
Because it basically incubates a mentality in the subtle depths of your inordinate minds that trying is wrong if you feel or think you will fail. Now try to translate this to real world scenarios and that too from would be great MBA’s who are required to solve such crises situation in their employer’s finances or marketing or as such any domain.
Now think of me as a manager who has zero experience with real world and I hit a roadblock in say ABC sector where my company has to bring on a radical change to capture market. But I have data that says I can improve sector XYZ with the same investment budgeted for and get good gains because consumers trust my company or say my market is already established. Now one more data says ABC is high risk for me. Why should I try where I think I will fail? Maybe it’s a farfetched comparison but it is still relevant because the negative marking makes you scared to do something new.
Is it a trait required by our managers or we want them to be daring?
In other systems such as R&D and Innovation, it is necessary to be bold to find something new and of course that is innovation. That, no doubt requires an approach where you are not scared to lose. But taking this approach to managerial levels or decision making levels, people say that you need to have a mix of both. This statement is a just another surreptitious statement, if you have never dared to look in the re shaping of minds for different corporate jobs. We know it is a requirement that you don’t do it if you feel you will fail. This is true for managers actually because inadvertently it sends messages that do you r homework completely before you call for a decision. Trace the reason thread, you will find that inculcation of your mind to be scared for the untried territory actually works in favor of managers. Now this certainly holds no good for people who go for R&D and Innovation as in IIT JEE.
Now I have another very interesting issue here that if you are an exceptional engineer and then you get you MBA, does that mean you have the right mix of that “daring and adventurous” issue (learnt from really tough written tests?) and “don’t go in dark” mentality developed from the MCQ tests basis.
This I believe is that once learnt, it takes a lot to unlearn. So it is not an easy task for a great engineer to make up a good manager. Since they have been brought up and taken for innovation and then folding them back in a circle of stop sign approach.
But that is up for another debate.

Coming back to The Great India
India is a great country. But is it by economy or by living standards or just by your heart.
The funny thing is people speak superfluously about being an Indian and that they are proud of India. But I have time and again asked those the simple three word “WHY”.
We Indians do sure changed something in last 50 years. That is the word of Democracy. Indian democracy is for the people, of the people, by the people and full of people.
I came here on 23rd July and the first sign of Indianess what I saw was when I was at the baggage claims in Mumbai airport. I saw the Paan spits near every corner and pillar. All public restrooms smell and overflow. Everyone was quite nonchalant about it and that is not great about being indain. Its quite funny that we dont change. We adapt. Yes that for sure is a great indian trait. Believe me it is the best about “Being Indian”. After that I went to Delhi, the story was not different. Patna was altogether great , all in the direction of being a third world country.
IT sure has changed something in india and that is a glittering life with a high cost of living and yet in midst of pollution and population at its zenith. This was apparent in Patna and Chennai both. Me and my friend avneesh tried to look for a pool joint to have some time pass. I love pool both billiards and swimming pool. Beer and Pool is all I did in USA.
Ok, where was I!
Me and my friend went out in Patna. Every place was full of cars, cycles, tricycles and ofcourse people. I was amazed to see this crazy life and honking at each other. We were at a crossroads and my friend honked at someone. There was this guy who was about to cross and he honked. This guy still went on and gave a look of pure contempt mixed with a self satisfying smile.
People's attitude is what a country's state reflect. And here was a ripe and ready example of callousness of indians and indian economy.
I was lucky the other day when I had a close shave with getting hit by a motorbike. Two lanes roads and people drive crazy in bangalore. The only thing which works in these cities is their horns. Aren't we have become more like animals then. There is no respect and no love for each other but horns do work on roads.
One and half years and lots of things have changed. Prices have gone sky-high. Traffic is well, you can move at least, snail's pace though. IT was a revered job back then and now its just another job with mounting credit on your wallet which is already too thin. The tuition fees for professional degrees are so much that you can pay them off in at least five years of job which is for sure hard for a average student. Yes job condition and availability has increased but the number of people coming out to get them has risen exponentially too.
And Indian IT industry is going to lose its cost advantage to US of A. The average salary in Usa is $60k and with a comfortable life with going out quite less will cost you 1200 a month and that makes a saving of 2400 a month. That's like 11 lakhs a year. Now thats just double of what a average IT engineer would save in india. But by the time you come back the prices of everything would have gone much higher. That puts you in that "One extra bedroom" paradox. The funny thing is even this is decreasing at an alarming rate. This is because living cost is increasing and IT engineers in big cities will demand more or the ones who cant demand will live a really disheveled life. This gap of outsourcing to india for USA corporates is going to close by 2015 and god knows what will happen to millions of IT engineers then. I am scared too. I am not a great software engineer because I am fun loving and mostly love to read fiction books.
Heyy, India is not that bad. Trust me I love india and that is for three things. My family, food and damn I love to admit but indians girls are so damn cute.
